Parashat Bechukosai

The content of parashat Behukotai is basically a contractual statement of blessings and curses, and the laws of valuation. Allow me to explain.  The contract states that if we as a nation follow the commandments, our national life on our homeland will be idyllic. If we don't follow the commandments  then we will be chased out of our land and great calamities will occur.  The laws of valuation  clarify how much a person has to pay to the Temple if he or she says, "let my value be donated to the Temple." The connection between the two is that at times when Jews do not follow the commandments, there is still one redeeming thing they can do and that is to vow, to set up a religious goal to reach and to reach it, to vow charity and to give one's pledge. If a person can at least live up to their own commitments before G-d, that is the beginning of a relationship with G-d.
