Parashat Behar

Parashat Behar focuses on the Jubilee and Sabbatical years which are a way of equalizing society every 7 and 50 years. The Portion goes on to describe other ways of helping a fellow Jew. The idea of the Sabbatical year is an extension of the idea of Shabbat. Shabbat is a test of the human ability to override our desire to build and conquer. On the Sabbatical year, the test is taken to a new level. Can society live at the level of Shabbat for a whole year or for two years in a row? Ultimately, the Jews are asked to live on a different plane, not only in the 40 years in the desert, but every week and every seven years.
