Devarim; Vicarious Activism

Devarim, Let Me Give You Some Advice About Advice

What was the sin of the spies? Feeling unloved.

Parashat Devarim

Why is it that our Parasha states that we didn’t pass through the land of Edom because G-d forbade it, and yet in Parashat Shelach in the book of Numbers, it claims that Edom didn’t allow us to pass? Some of my teachers have suggested that in Moses’ famous last words, known as the book of Devarim, he does not wish to mention anything discouraging, such as the notion that Edom forced us out of their turf.  So Moshe emphasized the volitional aspect of our avoidance of Edom, rather than our having been forced to do so.
