Eikev: The Many Lands of Israel

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the great mystic, writes that there are 12 lands of Israel mentioned in this parsha ( before sheni and around shishi). These 12 lands correspond to the 12 tribes, and the land of one is not like the land of the other. Israel is a very diverse land in its natural resources. The 12 different types of Jews have 12 different types of lands. The Rabbis tell us that every Jew is entitled to 4 amot of land in Israel, to be buried. In that sense, every Jew has a little piece of Israel for him or her. But since Israel is topographically so diverse, my land is not your land. Our prayer is that every Jew should find his or her Land of Israel, that little place in life which moves each of us and inspires us.
