Akiva Institute

Each November, ASBEE is proud to feature the Akiva Institute, an innovative adult learning program combining classes on diverse topics from cantorial music styles to Jewish short stories to Biblical exegesis--all selected to form a well-rounded Jewish education! Click here for this year's Akiva Institute schedule.

Adult Learning

Rabbi Finkelstein offers basic Jewish learning on Sunday evenings at 7:30 during the months of January and February.  These classes cover such topics as the Chumash or other books of the Bible, such as a close reading of one of the Prophets.  Contact the shul office or email Rabbi Finkelstein for more information.

Dovid Menachem Brown Talmud Shiur/Weekly Parsha Class

The Dovid Menachem Brown Talmud class meets every week, an hour and a half before sundown on Shabbos afternoon.  The weekly class on the parsha meets at the same time, and features different Torah scholars from throughout the Memphis Jewish community as well as visiting scholars.  Call the shul office at (901) 682-1611 for the exact time of this week's classes.

Wednesday Women's Class

This class meets every Wednesday at the homes of different women in our community, and features various speakers discussing Torah topics.  Call the shul office at (901) 682-1611 for the time and location of this week's class.

Women's Rosh Chodesh Group

Led by Bluma Zuckerbrot-Finkelstein, the Rosh Chodesh Group meets every month around Rosh Chodesh to discuss women in Tanach, Midrash, and Talmud. Past topics have included the Book of Ruth, Queen Esther, the daughters of Zelophchad, Dvorah, and Rabbi Akiva's wife Rachel, among many others.  Call the shul office or email the Rabbi for this month's topic, location and time.

Brown-Engelberg Jewish Music Concert

This annual concert is always a delight, and has featured such notable performers as the Jerusalem Great Synagogue Choir featuring Cantor Naftali Herstik; Cantor Binyamin Mueller of Antwerp, Belgium; and the ever-popular Three Cantors featuring our very own chazzan, Aryeh Samberg, along with Cantors John Kaplan of Temple Israel and David Julian of Beth Shalom.  Click here for this year's concert date and information.

Pre-Holiday Musings

A little something to think about as we head into holidays throughout the year, these classes are offered about a week or a few days before an upcoming holiday.  Past Pre-Holiday Musings topics have included "Making the Omer Count" and "How Merry is Chanukah Supposed to Be?".  Call the shul office at (901) 682-1611 or email the Rabbi to find out information about upcoming pre-holiday classes.

Rashi and Racquetball

A unique new program that combines discussion of the weekly parsha with physical fitness.  After learning with Cantor Aryeh Samberg at the Memphis Jewish Community Center, join him for a game of racquetball! Call the shul office at (901) 682-1611 or email the Cantor for exact dates and times.

Learning in the Living Room

You choose the topic and the location, invite your friends, and Rabbi Finkelstein answers your questions on anything from basic kashrut to the existence of angels to Jewish/Christian relations!  This unique learning opportunity is designed to make your learning more personal and answer questions that may not be covered in our regular classes.  Call or email the Rabbi to propose a topic or schedule a Learning in the Living Room event in your own home!

Small Group Learning Available with the Rabbi

Do you enjoy going to classes but want something more interactive? Rabbi Finkelstein can set up a time to meet with individuals or small groups for regular learning of the basic texts of Judaism, including Tanach, Talmud, or halachic literature.  Call or email Rabbi Finkelstein to find out more!

Daily Morning and Evening Torah Moments

For five minutes after Shacharit, and for about fifteen minutes between daily Mincha and Maariv davening, Rabbi Finkelstein delivers short talks on halacha, the holidays of that season, or the weekly parsha.  For a schedule or current davening times, contact the shul office at (901) 682-1611 or email the Rabbi.
