Parashat HaazinuHaazinu is a song which was supposed to be memorized for all generations in order to explain how Jews landed out in exile. Although it projects an end to our exile, it is a more begrudging sort of prophecy than most. Only last week we read that the Jews will one day repent and return to Israel. The song we read this week does not predict the return of Israel to G-d. Rather, it says that G-d will redeem us because the nations of the world see Israel’s exile as a proof that G-d never loved Israel and never gave us the Torah. Rather than allow that misconception to prevail, G-d will redeem us. Our portion today seems to say that if worse comes to worse, we do not repent, still we will be saved, because G-d cannot allow Israel to be destroyed utterly. Our fate and the fate of G-d’s name and the name of morality in this world are inter-linked.
