Analytic Outline of the Haggadah
A. Avadim Hayinu- we were
slaves, G-d saved us. If not we'd be there today. We need to tell the
story even if we are wise. We need to tell as much as possible.
This is the first telling of the story.
A1. A Story of Rabbi Akiva and friends
They did tell as much as possible. They were wise. Vicarious
telling.
B. Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah is prematurely gray
This night is different. Usually we only tell the story briefly. Even
the wise and old can learn new tricks.
C. The four sons
The story may be told and must be told even if we are not wise.
D. We used to be idol worshipers
This is another way to tell the story. It is the spiritual aspect of the
story.
E. 400 years of slavery and a day of spoils
This is the third way to tell the story. It speaks of the very material
value of the story.
F. Vehee She-amdah, in every generation they try to destroy us
This is a midrash on the preceding that it was the promise which saved
us throughout.
G. Laban and the Wandering Aramean
This is the final and fourth way to tell the Hagadah story from the sad
to the good. It is done with midrash.
H. Rabban Gamliel: anyone who did not say these three things, Pesach,
Matzah, and Maror?
This is a different way to tell the story. Not through a linear story
but through the visual aids. The mitzvot of eating are connected to the
mitzvah of telling.
I. In every Generation one is obligated to see themselves as if he went
out of Egypt.
This theme, also stated at the outset, of relevance, is essential if we
are to reach letter J.
J. Hallel
If we are truly identifying with the story we should feel thankful.
Nine aspects of telling the story (based on Rabbi Soloveitchik's ideas)
1) Be dramatic. Have a plot. Start with the sad and end with the glad.
2) Elaborate. Review.
3) Inspire questions. Ask and answer. Don't lecture.
4) Use visual aids, esp. Matza, maror, bones, charoset, leaning,
drinking, dipping
5) Personalize, see how it is relevant. 6) React when its over. Hallel.
7) Add your own twist. Interpret. 8) Eat. Relax. Make it informal,
incidental learning. 9) Reach for the other worldly, messianic,
eschatological.
