Just You Wait and See
Cast: Yankel, kids, narrators I-IV
Scene I
Narrator I: The scene is Chaikoshok, Lithuania, 1930
Crowd: Crash. Smash. Pow. Thchooo.
Kid I: Abba, vos is dos?
Yankel: This is the sound of people who hate us, people who want to
destroy us, to leave this land. But don't worry, everything will be
alright. One day we will sit in our land in a big villa with a porch,
and a view of the hills of Israel. One day.
Kid II: Really Abba? You think we'll ever get to Eretz Yisrael?
Yankel: Do I think so? SURE!! Have no doubt about it. We'll go to
Israel
and in Israel we will defend ourselves. No one will be able to attack us
with impunity.
Kid III: But Abba, do you think Jews will ever be strong enough to
have
our own army?
Yankel: Will we be strong enough? SURE! Have no doubt about it. Are
you
kidding? Sure! We'll have the best army in the world. No one will dare
attack us. The world we be scared of the powerful Jewish army, and
Hashem who is on our side.
Kid IV: The best army in the whole world?
Yankel: Why SURE!
Kid I: But Abba! The Arabs and the other nations will never let us
do
it. They hate us so much.
Yankel: Are you kidding? It says in Isaiah that one day the nations
of
the world will bring us to Israel in boats. They will be thrilled to get
rid of us and they will be so tickled that the people of the Torah have
returned to the Holy Land.
Kid II: Really?
Yankel: SURE! And as a matter of fact, when things calm down, we'll
get
the first boat out with some of the Zionists groups I know around here.
We'll soon be on the sunny shores of the Holy Land of Israel!
Kid V: Really Abba? We're gonna see Israel soon?
Yankel: Why sure!!!
Scene II
Narrator II: The Chana-pea-oh-tea family snuck out of Lithuania and
out
of Europe and was headed for Palestine, the Promised Land. There was
only one problem. It was illegal for Jews to enter Palestine above the
official quota allowed by the British.
Crowd: (tilting from side to side) Wo! Wo! Wo!
Kid III: Abba, I feel sick.
Yankel: Don't worry mint kint, soon we'll be in Eretz Yisrael
and in
Eretz Yisrael there will be no sickness. They won't allow it.
Kid VII: Really Abba? No sickness?
Yankel: Sure! Who needs it?
Kid VIII: But Abba, the British will never let us in to Palestine!
Yankel: Don't worry so much! With Hashem's help, we will get there
somehow.
Kid IV: How Abba? They're gonna catch us and send us home.
Yankel: What? Are you kidding? We're not gonna go home. We're gonna
move
to Israel, and in the Land of Israel no one will bother us again, and in
the Land of Israel we will one day have our own Villa with a porch, and
a beautiful view.
Kid V: Really Abba?
Yankel: Sure!
Scene III
Narrator III: The boat was captured and the whole crew were placed
in a
detention camp in Atlit in Northern Israel.
Crowd: plowing, reaping.
Yankel: Didn't I tell you how wonderful it is in Erez Yisrael? In
Lithuania, a Jew didn't touch a plow. In Israel, a Jew falls in love
with the land and for me, working the land is the only thing I ever want
to do for the rest of my life.
Kid VI: But Abba, what ever happened to the Villa with the porch?
Yankel: Now you wanna know about the Villa mit dem porch? That's
later.
We just got here. First we need to work hard. One day the Villa will
come.
Kid X: really?
Yankel: Sure!
Scene IV
Narrator IV: After a few years, Yankel moved into a small
apartment, but
it did have a porch, with a nice view.
Yankel: Ah! A mechayah! A pleasure. When I sit here on my porch and
look
at the land of Israel and all that we have achieved, when I see children
playing in the streets, Jewish soldiers walking the streets with pride,
I feel like the Messiah is here.
Kid IX: But what ever happened to the Villa?
Yankel: Don't you worry. You'll see that Villa yet one day. You'll
see.
This country has only begun to grow. One day it will be the most
beautiful country in the world. Jews will be begging to get in. Everyone
will come from all over the world, even from Lithuania, to see how
gorgeous our land is.
Kid X: Really? Do you think it could ever be that good?
Yankel: Are you kidding? Sure! Look, to me, if I'm in my own land,
and I
have my dignity, and I can defend myself, and a yid can be a yid, a Jew
can be a Jew. To me, this is mamash meshiach tzietin. It's really
the
times of the Meshiah.
All Kids: Really Abba?
Yankel: You bet. Sure!!!! Is this a great country or what?
All Kids: Sure! |
