This portion contains one of
the largest collections of mitzvot in any parasha. It is a collection of
74 mitzvahs. Some have some very relevant applications today.
Primogeniture
The
portion states that the first born male child receives twice the
inheritance of the other children. The child would also inherit before the
surviving spouse. As a result, one who wishes to follow Jewish law needs
to write an addendum to their will that the inheritance goes to all of the
family equally (or as you wish) a moment before death, as a gift, and
therefore there is no extra inheritance left for the eldest. If you wish
to draw up such a will, please speak with the rabbi.
Shaatnez
The
Torah doesn’t tell us why we can’t mix linen and wool but there are
several theories. One is that we don’t want to cross certain boundaries
between the plant and animal world. It is like mix breeding. The problem
with this explanation is that cotton and wool can be mixed. Perhaps a
better explanation is that shaatnez was the garment of the times for
priests of idolatry. In our efforts to remove ourselves from Egyptian
ideas, we refrain from this mixture. Archeology seems to confirm this
theory.
