The Laws of the Three Weeks Between the Two Fasts

1.      Haircuts are not taken.

2.      Weddings and festive musical parties or entertainment are forbidden.

3.      We do not wear new clothing, esp. during the nine days. On Shabbat one may wear new clothing.

4.      Swimming for pleasure is forbidden during the 8 days prior to the fast of Av.

5.     During the "9 days" between the first of Av and Tisha B'Av, men should not shave unless it is necessary for business reasons, and laundry should be prepared before these days commence. We refrain from bathing all at once in hot water. (Due to the proximity to Shabbos, one may do laundry  even right after the fast. We refrain from shaving and bathing until sunrise on the morning after the fast.)

6.      During these nine days, one may not eat meat, chicken or drink wine. The wine of the Havdalah  on Saturday night during the 9 days should preferably be given to a child, but if none is available, an adult may drink it.

7.      Laws may vary for a Sephardic Jew, please consult the Rabbi for details.
